Understanding the Health Culture of Recent Immigrants to the United States: A Cross-Cultural Maternal Health Information Catalog. From the American Public Health Association.
This maternal health information catalog focuses on the unique maternal health cultures of three main regions of the world from which immigrants to the U.S. frequently come. These regions include Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Within each region, a country is showcased by a case study. Country Case Studies have been selected based on three criteria: (1) a significant proportion of U.S. immigrants are from that country, according to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and other population sources; (2) the country's health beliefs and health care practices differ significantly from Western medical practice and/or the American health care system; and (3) data was available on the country's birthing practices, health beliefs regarding pregnancy, its childbearing women, and other similar information relevant to immigrant maternal health.
